Black History in Black Run Hike - Sunday, March 15, 2026

Join former teacher, Ambassador, and Founder of the Black Run Preserve, John Volpa, for a stroll through local Black History. Hear about the heroic Levin and Charity Still escaping bondage in Maryland. In the early 1800’s, many would find refuge in Evesham Township with the help of West Jersey Quakers and the early Underground Railroad. Participate in reading from the Still’s oldest son James Still’s autobiography, who became known as the “Black Doctor of the Pines”. Discover how their youngest son, William, became known as the “Father of the Underground Railroad”. Learn about a Black community of former and runaway slaves that existed on the edge of what is now the Black Run Preserve. Explore the cultural connections that bind Philadelphia’s Black community with Evesham Township.

DATE: Sunday, March 15, 2026
TIME: 10:00am to 12:00pm (Meet at the welcome table at 9:30 am to check in.)
WHERE TO MEET: Kettle Run Road East Trailhead Entrance. This is the main trailhead for Black Run Preserve.
WHAT TO WEAR: Dress for the weather and bring a water bottle. Protect yourself from the sun, bugs, and cold.Hiking boots, sturdy shoes, or waterproof boots are recommended.
DETAILS: This is a social/informational hike to familiarize participants with the trails of the Black Run Preserve and the Friends of the Black Run Preserve community.
